There is a need in aquatic entomology for modern data management tools that can be deployed in the field. While a pen and notepad is a tool sufficient for some tasks, many processes could be made more efficient by a software application with an intuitive user interface and internet connectivity. This would allow for the rapid communication of collected data, as well as dependable storage and real time calculations. StreamLine is a mobile application that provides a toolset for aquatic entomologists to easily enter data, make calculations, and upload information to a database. StreamLine is designed to be used in the field, which largely takes place while crouching in streams and in locations where mobile data service is unavailable. Therefore, the user interface is simple, requiring few button presses and no pinch-zooming. If no mobile data is available, StreamLine will store data locally. This data can be uploaded to the backend database once internet is available. Streamline uses the Google Sheets API, which provides various options for users to view and edit data. This also allows for multiple users to view the data as it is being entered. Streamline utilizes the mobile device’s GPS system to allow the user to set an associated latitude and longitude with the current work site. StreamLine was developed with input from two aquatic entomologists in Western North Carolina who also served as software testers to ensure that the application provides an effective solution for collecting data in the field.
